Stretch Well is an amalgamation of various stretching techniques, mainly influenced by Remedial Massage practice and Stretch Therapy TM. Stretch Well is stretching with presence and awareness.
I love stretching! I have been practicing some form of yoga for almost 20 years, so I already knew the benefits of having good flexibility. After I had some muscular lower back pain, my massage therapist gave me some more focused stretching to do and it felt amazing. Doing my stretches regularly has definitely kept lower back pain away!
Since then, I practice different types of stretching (Stretch Therapy, Yin Yoga, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation - PNF etc.). This interest in muscle function and flexibility led me to become a Remedial Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer.
The aim of Stretch Well is to increase your flexibility and range of motion. As a result you may feel that you have “ironed out” the knots in your muscles and become more relaxed. A typical Stretch Well class or session takes you through some warm up limbering and range of motion exercises, stretching poses and relaxation/breathing techniques.
1 hour follow along class
Unwind and come for a relaxing hour where we stretch general muscle groups and some individual muscles. The stretches in class vary each week. We recommend a weekly practice of Stretch Well over a period of 10 weeks to feel the benefits.
30 or 45 minutes 1-on-1 session
Personalised stretching program based on an analysis of posture and muscular function. Recommended if you feel muscle stiffness and/or have pain. The number of Stretch Well sessions required depends on your current condition.
I’M NEW TO STRETCHING, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Stretch Well will assist with:
Increasing flexibility and range of motion. This means that your muscles are able to function better. Many modern ailments are due to shortened and stiff muscles e.g. lower back pain, thoracic outlet syndrome, tennis/golfer’s elbow etc. Regular stretching assists in managing such conditions and unwinding.
Injury prevention. Stretching improves muscular circulation, range of motion and balance. All these contribute to better performance in your chosen fitness activities and faster recovery.
Stress management and feeling re-energised. Stretch Well classes and sessions are designed to be relaxing and we nurture the mind to body connection. On a physiological level when you stretch your muscles the increase in circulation detoxifies your tissues and the release of feel-good endorphins induce an energising feeling.
Improves breathing. Breathing is extremely important while stretching, taking deep full lungs and belly breaths help reduce stress and anxiety, increases your metabolism and body temperature.
I STRETCH EVERYDAY, HOW IS STRETCH WELL DIFFERENT?
Stretch Well is a more focused and effective form of stretching. Small corrections may make a significant difference when you are in a stretch pose. Having guidance while stretching helps improve your technique and (like any fitness practice) encourages you to cross new thresholds and learn to stretch well!
I DO YOGA, DO I NEED TO STRETCH MORE?
It depends on how your body feels and the type of yoga that you practice. I find that some more active/yang yoga gives me a good workout but little stretch.
Stretch Well is more focused at stretching than yoga and generally demands less core strength making it appropriate for complete beginners, seniors and you!
